I basically agree with all of your arguments, but I'm also struggling to square this with my model of the views of the x-risk community:

I can imagine the response being something like 'a recursively self improving AI is insanely, ridiculously intelligent'. I'm not sure if there's anything productive to do to get these different views to converge?

The argument I have heard for AI x-risk is that even if it poses 0.0005% chance of coming true, we should dedicate resources to fight it because the stakes are so high. Which, fair.

But this leaves a lot of the more probable scenarios of the AI future unexplored. I appreciate what you're doing with articles like this and the slopworld one.
