I basically agree with all of your arguments, but I'm also struggling to square this with my model of the views of the x-risk community:

I can imagine the response being something like 'a recursively self improving AI is insanely, ridiculously intelligent'. I'm not sure if there's anything productive to do to get these different views to converge?

A worker actively deceiving his boss by pretending to be busy but actually not working at all is not being sycophantic. A sycophant is excessively fawning and insincere, usually with the hope of gaining some reward or advantage.

A shirker of work isn't being sycophantic unless he is slathering exaggerated praise upon his boss while shirking.
